Top Five Things to Consider when Choosing to Start a Cleaning Business

Posted by franchiseinformation on October 9, 2013

Top Five Things to Consider when Choosing to Start a Cleaning Business.

In an uncertain economic environment where finding a job, much less a career, can be both strenuous and stressful – many smart and savvy working professionals are yearning for the opportunity to be their own boss. While opening a small business can have tremendous personal and financial rewards, it is often viewed as a risky endeavor based on the liability assumed by individual ownership.

However, The commercial cleaning industry presents the perfect solution; an opportunity to own and operate your own franchise, be your own boss, and excel in a recession-proof industry with little to no specialized experience or education necessary. Find a company that has the experience and expertise needed to help you start a cleaning business, but before you get started there are a few important things to consider.

1. Is this the right business for me?
Commercial cleaning services are a $100 billion dollar industry projected to grow by more than 5% in the next three years alone. Owning a franchise that is part of a great structured franchisor program is a great way to stay profitable in a time of economic uncertainty; with low overheads, consistent demand, and high opportunities for growth. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that a professional cleaning specialist will be the fastest growing occupation in the next ten years, reaffirming the potential expansion of the industry and related professions.

2. Franchise management vs. independent ownership?
Owning an independent business and owning an established franchise are both viable ways to start a cleaning business; however franchise ownership offers considerable advantages that help foster long-term success. Franchise owners benefit from the company’s reputation and reliability, along with their growing base of satisfied customers. Many of the best franchisors support franchisees by offering operational training, business development coaching, marketing support, technical support, and industry/technology trend information all without having to take on the high collateral and liability associated with independent ownership.

3. Residential vs. Commercial cleaning services?
When choosing to start a cleaning business, the two most common choices are residential or commercial cleaning services. Both have key advantages; residential cleaning is usually less expensive to start, but commercial cleaning has a greater opportunity for profit and success. Owning and managing a franchise allows you to bypass the high start-up costs of creating a business from scratch while reaping the benefits of operating behind a well-established brand with solid industry connections. The commercial sector includes large-scale projects, janitorial cleaning, and a much wider range of cleaning services than the consumer sector, making it an advantageous alternative for those looking to start a cleaning business

4. Who is the target market?
While the potential benefits of commercial cleaning services are unrivaled, the task of securing customers within this market may seem daunting to those first getting started. Good franchisors will be there to help with a foundation built upon a history of top-level service. Owning a franchise under an established brand opens your business to a network of industry partners who trust and rely on the continued professionalism of franchisees. Office buildings, retail stores, healthcare facilities, stadiums, and manufacturing plants are all great examples of commercial businesses included in your potential target market.

5. What services will be provided?
There are a variety of services that commercial cleaning businesses provide and it is important to decide which areas to focus on before getting started. Floor care services, such as carpet cleaning, are exceedingly popular for commercial clients as well as exterior services such as window washing. Many franchisees specialize in scheduled maintenance cleaning for their regular customers as well. Solidifying your area of expertise will allow you to gain greater clout in the industry and further establish your brand image as a highly regarded franchise owner.

You don’t have to be an expert – an understanding of these five aspects combined with an entrepreneurial drive and dedication to success are all that’s required to start a cleaning business. Franchise Trade Show News, 2013 International Franchise Expo Biggest In Event’s History

Posted by franchiseinformation on July 9, 2013

FranchiseWorks.com | Franchise Trade Show News: 2013 International Franchise Expo Was The Biggest In Event’s History. Nearly 20,000 visitors, more than 400 exhibitors flock to NYC for Franchise Expo.

Paramus, N.J. – July 2012 – Hosted in New York City for the second year in a row, the 2013 International Franchise Expo (IFE) marks the biggest in the event’s 22-year history. From June 20-22, nearly 20,000 visitors from more than 90 countries explored 413 franchise exhibitors at the Javits Center – from well-established name brands to emerging, fast-growing concepts. The success of this year’s IFE, put on by MFV Expositions, is further proof that franchising plays a significant role in the recovering economy.

As a testament to the industry, this year’s expo kicked off with a breakfast announcing the findings of the inaugural ADP National Franchise Report, created in collaboration with Moody’s Analytics to identify trends and insight into the sector’s impact on the labor market. The report shows private-sector franchise jobs increasing by 19,160 during the month of May, with restaurants, food retailers and business services showing the largest increases. Approximately 150,000 jobs were added over the past twelve months through the franchising industry.

“The ADP report was the perfect start to this year’s expo as it helped solidify franchising’s position as an essential driver of small business and the U.S. economy,” said Tom Portesy, president and CEO of MFV Expositions. “This was further evidenced by the quality of attending potential franchise owners as more than 30 percent planned to invest between $100,000 – $500,000 in a new franchise business.”

More than 50 industries were represented at the expo, including everything from restaurant and education to health care and children’s services, representing North American-based companies looking to expand abroad as well as international brands looking to enter the U.S. market.

“As a first-time exhibitor and a relative newcomer to franchising, we weren’t sure what to expect,” said Scott Nelowet, founder of Florida-based French Fry Heaven. “We were thoroughly impressed not only with the sheer volume of foot traffic, but of the variety and quality of prospects we met. We spoke with people from all over the world who had a genuine interest in our simple French-fry-only concept. It’s hard to put a price on the kind of value you get from an event like the IFE.”

Attendees learned best practices from industry experts who hosted educational symposium geared toward every stage of the journey. Among these opportunities, one of the best attended was the International Symposium which included 13 symposia and seminars on essential topics from how to begin franchising internationally to how to choose the right markets. In addition, the IFE hosted a Private Equity and Finance Conference of four in-depth sessions led by the industry’s key players who shared insights on the state of financing in franchising and how private equity affects a franchise brand.

Attention from media organizations was high too, giving exhibitors opportunities to get their brands in front of consumers and investors beyond the show floor. FOX & Friends, CNNMoney, TheStreet.com, The Wall Street Journal, Telemundo, The New York Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, WPIX-TV, Black Enterprise Magazine, Associated Press, and CBS Evening News were just some of the news organizations interested in exhibitors.

Next year’s IFE will be held June 19-21, 2014 at the Javits Center.  For more information, please visit http://www.ifeinfo.com.

It’s no surprise that franchising accounts for a large part of the recovering American economy, contributing significantly to two critical elements – job creation and GDP – and outperforming the economy as a whole in 2012. According to the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) 2013 economic outlook, franchising is projected to add more than 10,000 franchise establishments, account for nearly 8.3 million jobs by the end of 2013 and contribute a GDP of $472 billion.

“Mirroring this steady growth is the increasing number of franchisors participating in trade shows to strategically grow their system,” said Jim Mastandrea, Group Show Director of MFV Expositions. “The IFE also draws qualified attendees ranging from recent college grads to retirees looking to get back in the business world.  The expo truly covers all ends of the spectrum – from out-of-the-box, niche franchises to well-known, global brands.  Attendees are sure to find a concept that fits their interests and lifestyle.”

Industry experts will host educational symposium geared toward every stage of the journey. Offering more than 70 free seminars along with nine in-depth symposia, the IFE offers a wealth of knowledge into the franchise industry. With more than 90 countries represented from around the world and more than 150 U.S. Embassies through their Foreign Commercial Service Offices actively promoting the IFE within their regions, the IFE has been a significant catalyst to the global expansion of franchising.

Why Should I Attend The International Franchise Expo (IFE) June 20-22 In New York

Posted by franchiseinformation on April 23, 2013

Why Should I Attend The International Franchise Expo (IFE) June 20-22 In New York?

A recent report found that franchise businesses will continue to grow at a slightly faster rate than other businesses in terms of job creation, new business formation, economic output and GDP contribution according to IFA’s first quarter update to The Economic Outlook for Franchise Businesses report prepared by IHS Global Insight for the IFA Educational Foundation. The report shows franchising remains an incredibly strong and resilient business model that generates jobs and economic growth for the American economy.

With that being said, thousands of entrepreneurs and business owners will flock to the largest franchise expo in the country to meet over 400 franchised businesses from every industry. The 22nd Annual International Franchise Expo (IFE), the franchise industry’s premier annual event sponsored by International Franchise Association, is a three-day show taking place June on 20-22 at the Javits Center in New York City. At the franchise trade show, the top restaurant franchise brands and current franchisees have the rare opportunity to meet face-to-face with one another.

Auto Repair Franchise Honest-1 Auto Care News Article: On the Job with Terry May

Posted by franchiseinformation on April 23, 2013

FranchiseWorks.com | Auto Repair FranchiseHonest-1 Auto Care News Article: On the Job with Terry May.

“My dad bought a ’63 Ford Fairlane in 1973, and the thermostat needed to be changed. At age 13, I was told to give it a shot.” That was the beginning of Terry May’s career as an automotive technician.

May’s first paying job was at age 16, in the small garage in Roberts, Wisconsin. Then he honed his skills as a jet engine mechanic in the U.S. Air Force for four years. When he came out of the military, he went back into automotive repair. “I’m pretty much self-taught,” he said. “I took a lot of night classes. I got the CERTITECH certification from Amoco. I went to foreign car schools.”

After 40 years in the business, May said he has no intention of slowing down. He is now shop foreman for Honest-1 Auto Care in Cottage Grove. “I’m still working as hard as I did when I was 16. I will do it as long as I can. I really enjoy what I do. I’ve got five hotrods at home that I’m still working on,” he said.

Are automotive technicians in demand?

Next year there’s going to be 120,000 unfilled automotive jobs. When I came into the field, a lot of people were retiring, and not a lot of people were coming in. Now we’re running into the same thing. People are retiring or getting into service writer positions or something not as physical.

What would draw someone into the field?

My son in 8th grade was online to be a bioengineer, until he found out he was going to be in a cubicle. He said, “I like being outside in the garage.” We said “Whatever makes you happy.” Century College works with Gordon Parks High School to provide automotive education. In their junior and senior year, they can go out and learn some stuff. Some kids are just like me — they have a cheap car, they muddle through what they can. It’s a lot tougher to break in these days. How I got started was just hanging around. Then pretty soon the boss goes, “if you want to do something, just jump in. If you get stuck, I’ll come help you.” When you’re young you don’t figure out how good he was to you. Now I realize “Wow — I wouldn’t be here without his help.”

What’s the biggest change over the past 30 years?
The stress level of the olden days was in one direction — not knowing everything, wanting to be on top of the game. The stress level now is from the vast amount of different things. Every car system is completely different. The basics are there but the systems are different.

What’s the best part of the job?
It provides income to build hotrods. The enjoyment at work is when a customer picks up a car and says, “I’ve had this a couple different places and they couldn’t fix it. Thanks for taking care of it for me.” People will bring in a car, and they start telling me everything they’ve already done to fix it. I tell them, “I don’t want to know what you did — if I start where you left off I won’t find the problem.” If I go in as a new experience, I will start with basics and work my way through it. My son will call me when he runs into a problem. I say, “Go back to the basics. You missed something along the way.”
